Sonia Whiteman

Director, Writer

Born in Brazil and raised in Aotearoa (NZ), Sonia’s storytelling journey took her to the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, for a Bachelor of Film and Television. Now she is a Sydney based Writer and Director.

Her early short films captivated audiences worldwide, screening at prestigious festivals such as Oberhausen, Cinema Jove, Bruxelles, and Los Angeles. LEN’S LOVE STORY starring Mia Wasikowska and Damon Herriman made waves as the only Australian film in competition at Clermont-Ferrand 2007 and was highlighted by *New York Magazine* as one of the Top 5 shorts at Tribeca. Meanwhile, HANDYMAN earned a spot as a Best Australian Comedy Finalist at St Kilda Film Festival.

Sonia co-wrote the feature film UPROAR, starring Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver, and Rhys Darby, which premiered at TIFF 2023 before its theatrical release worldwide. She was a Director, Co-Writer, and Story Producer on THE DISPOSABLES, a bold youth environmental action series (Photoplay Films/ABC TV). Selected for the Writers Campus at Series Mania 2024, Sonia continues to develop a slate of exciting projects in both Film and TV, in her drive to bring compelling stories to the screen.
